Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic services are used most often to treat patients with neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to, back pain, neck pain, headaches, and pain in the joints of the arms and/or legs to provide pain relief.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
One of the most common and well known therapeutic procedures performed by a Chiropractor is spinal manipulation (Chiropractic Adjustment). Its purpose is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a gentle, controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile (restricted in their movement). Immobilization of a joint can result in inflammation and degeneration of surrounding tissues. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, preventing the degenerative process from progressing, alleviating pain, muscles tightness, and allowing tissues to heal properly. In addition, when full spinal alignment and motion is maintained, the body is able to optimize the use of the nervous system, allowing the body to function at 100%.
WHAT TO EXPECT
At the first visit, the Doctor of Chiropractic will start by performing a thorough history and evaluation which will include postural, range of motion, orthopedic, and neurological components. This information along with any radiological studies (if necessary), will enable the doctor to reach a diagnosis and determine whether Chiropractic services are appropriate for the patient and their condition. If Chiropractic care is something that can help the patient, the doctor will then create a treatment plan catered to the individual. The doctor will then spend the necessary time to review in-depth the diagnosis and treatment plan with the patient, taking the time to answer any questions that may arise. Upon completion of this process, treatment typically begins that same day. In addition to spinal manipulative therapy, the Chiropractor may also choose to utilize specific myofascial techniques, stretching/strengthening exercises, and nutritional recommendations on a case by case basis to further assist the patient in achieving their health and wellness goals.
